‘Freedom of the City’ Parade

Date: Saturday May 6, 2017
Time: 0900
Place: City Hall Plaza
13450 104 Avenue, Surrey, BC

For the first time in the history of Surrey, the City of Surrey is bestowing the honor of  freedom of The City to 3300 British Columbia Regiment (Bhai Kanhaiya) Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps

Freedom of the City is a tradition that started in the 1600s; traditionally, military units were stationed outside of cities at that point in time. They would live in camps and it was frowned upon to have the military units show up within city walls, adding there was a strong aversion to having a military presence within the walls, disturbing the peace.

But after becoming more familiar and building trust with citizens, military units were eventually granted the honor of Freedom of the City, observed with a symbolic parade through the city with banners flying and drums playing.  These events are quite rare and it is the highest honor bestowed upon a military unit.  Our Cadets are proud and excited about upholding a centuries-old military tradition.  They will be marching with a full military band and color party.
